While passing Jaarbeursplein you could have not missed the construction sides. We also passed multiple times and could not wait for some new establishments to brighten up the area. And then finally the first new hotspot made her entrance: Metro City Kitchen! The word ‘Metro’ in the name refers to the word ‘Metropool’. The owners think that Utrecht will become a metropool (or already is). This restaurant is located right in the centre of the Jaarbeursplein, directly next to the bicycle park. What a location!

Costs: €12 – €22 for a main dish in their brasserie. Location: Jaarbeursplein 15

We had a very warm welcome from the staff of Metro City Kitchen. We started our night at their terrace, which has sun almost all day long. After the sun went down we were escorted to our table in the greenhouse. I hear you thinking ‘A greenhouse in a restaurant?’ But yes! They’ve build a cozy greenhouse inside where all kinds of plants grow. The restaurant is pretty big but the owners managed to create multiple areas. Next to their (seriously) amazing bar they have some comfy lounge spots and bar tables who are perfect for coffee or a drink. Metro City Kitchen is definitely a restaurant where you can hop in at any time of the day.

As starter we’ve tried the duck breast, beef carpaccio and the marinated salmon. The duck breast made a really good impression! As a main course we took the tournedos, redfish fillet and duck confit. They have a very extensive menu with their dishes perfectly divided in meat, fish or vegetarian. And of course we’ve ended the night with a dessert! We took the raspberry cheesecake which was a very fresh dessert, a gazpacho of strawberry and a chocolate cake. With an Irish coffee we ended our delicious meal.

What we especially like about Metro City Kitchen is that with its extensive menu and nice interior it is a very inviting place to go. Since it is practically open all day long (from 7 am to 12 pm and even until 1 am in the weekend!), this is a place where you can go to have breakfast, lunch, snacks, dinner and you name it. We already took a sneak peak at their breakfast and lunch menu and it looked so good that we definitely have to go back very soon!

Pro’s

  • They offer two menus: a bistro and a fancy dinner variant
  • Stylish interior and a big terrace with sun all day long
  • Very broad opening hours

Con’s

  • The restaurant is located in front of a busy square
  • If you like intimate dining this restaurant might be too big
