Yihaa, The Dutch Film Festival (NFF) is in less than a month! On the 27th of September until the 5th of October, Utrecht will be a playground for movie lovers (like us). During that time you have the option to see movies, documentaries, and talks by actors, producers, and writers. Out of a wide selection we selected 7 of our favorites, among them 3 that are free of charge.  

Summary

  • Instinct (27 September): Carice van Houten plays a psychiatrist who falls in love with a charming psychopath in this psychological thriller.
  • Kapsalon Romy (29 September): A 10-yo realizes grandma is not only caring for her but also vice versa. A movie for everyone aged 8 – 88 about dealing with Alzheimer’s and the loving relationship between a grandma and granddaughter.
  • Free – De Libi (30 September): a coming of age movie with three 17-year-old boys from Amsterdam.
  • Mooie Alexander (1 October) is a moving and poetic short movie (12 minutes) about inner struggle, passion and the search for expression of a boy who is starting to discover his sexuality.
  • Free – Ring of Dreams (1 October): fantasy and reality meet in this documentary. Ring of Dreams tells the story of fighting for your dreams against the backdrop of our boring daily lives.
  • Free – De Dirigent (2 October): Movie based on the life of the first woman ever who conducted large symphony orchestras.
  • De belofte van Pisa (5 October): While prejudice, the lure of crime and his family’s ignorance keep dogging Sam, a coming-of-age story unfolds full of drama, humor, love, and music.

Instinct officially opens the Dutch Film Festival. In this thriller, Carice van Houten (Game of Thrones) plays Nicoline, a psychiatrist. Trapped in a confusing relationship with her mother and her fascination with a sex offender, her desires push her in a dangerous direction. The charming psychopath is about to go on his first unaccompanied probation, but Nicoline is skeptical. In this psychological thriller, the trial of strength gives her more pleasure than she dares to admit. Directing debut of Halina Reijn.

Janskerk Utrecht: one of the most original cinema’s in the Netherlands

I love everything about visiting a church: the high ceilings, stained glass, cleverly done paintings and the smell of incense… during the Dutch Film Festival (Nederlands Film Festival) the Janskerk is extra magical. In this church, NFF together with Centrum Management Utrecht screens 3 movies. Everyone is welcome and you’ll enjoy these screenplays for free:

De Libi

Bilal, Gregg and Kevin, three seventeen-year-old boys from an Amsterdam suburb, cannot wait for real life to begin. After their final examinations, they will fly! On one of the countless boring school days, a group of girls challenges them to meet them at the famous nightclub Jimmy Woo that night, so they go all out to get access to the club. Shady El-Hamus’ feature debut is an energetic road trip full of humor and boundless optimism. The film title is street lingo for ‘the life’.

Mooie Alexander

Marc Wagenaar’s debut is an almost dialogue-less, poetic impression of an insecure teenager’s dilemma. Alexander spends his first holiday alone in an old beach cabin. Longing for affection, but searching for his identity, he stays inside. From the cabin, he watches the people on the beach. On a diving board, in the middle of the sand, he spots someone who is making some dance moves. Hesitant at first, but increasingly uninhibited, Alexander mimics him, which yields a cautious dance duet at a safe distance. Will he dare to make the next move?

Ten-year-old Romy dislikes the fact she has to go to her child-sitting grandma Stine every day, who works as a hairdresser and suffers from Alzheimer’s disease. When she confides in her granddaughter and tells her about her growing forgetfulness and fogginess, Romy realizes grandma is not only caring for her but also vice versa.

Must watch for children and adults alike (suitable from 8 – 88 years old)

Dutchie Laura lived in Utrecht for 10 years. And the Domcity has developed ever since. More and more coffee bars have popped up and there are a lot of places to grab a sandwich on the go or stay for work. Best of all, Utrecht has a wide variety in of restaurants. Laura’s favorite? Anything with sushi, pasta, Indian, vegetarian, burgers, fish, meat, classic French… she’s not picky at all!
