FAK? Yes, we had to check it twice as well: is the name of this new restaurant really FAK? It is and we love it! FAK stands for French Asian Kitchen and that is exactly what this whole restaurant is about. Located in one of my favorite streets in Utrecht: De Drieharingstraat. Spoiler alert: FAK has the potential to become the new hotspot of the street (and area)!

The moment we stepped in, we could feel the effort that has been put in to make this place beautiful. You wouldn’t say it though when standing outside, the facade still shows that this place used to be restaurant Van Buuren, but from inside it is hard to tell it has ever been another restaurant. It is a restaurant where I had to use my self-restraint a lot. The first challenge came our way when we only sat down for a minute: 10 minutes where you couldn’t use your phone. Although I find it hard to admit if there would be an official definition of phone addict I probably would be defined as such. And I proved just that: after 3 minutes I found myself reaching for my phone again: MISSION FAILED! Such a shame, because if you manage not to use your phone, you will get a free bite with your first drink. Next time hopefully!

Let’s move on to the menu, which can best be described as a wide blend of many small dishes for you to share. Classical French dishes, think boeuf bourguignon and cheese fondue alternate with typical Asian classics such as Chinese pancakes and Japanese sushi. This makes ordering a lot of fun because it is a real surprise what you will get every time. The menu also has some fun surprises like the possibility to order a round of shots for the whole restaurant or to treat the kitchen staff to an after-work beer. Cool!

Little spoiler, I also heard that they are busy working on one of the best things in the world: a room where you can sing karaoke! Even though it might still take a while, I am already looking forward to a night of loud singing, champagne, and sushi. FAK we will be back!

Pros

  • Large and original menu (French + Asian = ♥)
  • Stylish interior: they really put an effort into the ambiance
  • Great and central location in the heart of Utrecht

Cons

  • Prices are pretty reasonable, but if you go wild on ordering you will probably be shocked by the bill
