Sometimes you have to travel a bit further to get to something good. Like Maaike and I experienced when we went to Restaurant de Zusters in Maarssen. But Utrecht itself houses some pearls that are located just outside the city center; one of them is Mr. Black and the White Ox. Located opposite the Douwe Egberts Factory, on the outskirt of Lombok. We visited the restaurant when it just opened!

The best of both worlds: Mr. Black and the White Ox

The owners of Mr. Black and the White Ox wanted to combine the best of both worlds: a place to wine-and-dine and one to enjoy a good breakfast/lunch. That is why they created one restaurant with two ‘ themes’. The Mr. Black area focuses on breakfast + lunch and has a cozy vibe. Since the building used to be one of the Douwe Egberts offices, Mr. Black has some items that hint back to that past. Think large vintage posters advertising Douwe Egberts coffee. Next to that, they serve coffee made with their neighbors finest coffee beans. Both concepts merge seamlessly together and are divided by a big glass door. the White Ox is more sophisticated, the walls are plastered with leopards and a wooden floor is combined with tiles. The White Ox also houses a wine tasting area, for private parties but also because the owner just really likes to host wine parties.

Original and refreshing

The lunch menu has a lot to choose from. I settle on the goat cheese salad with vanilla ice and lavender. Not because I am such a health freak but more because of the ice cream and cheese combination. My friend decided to get the fish and chips. Both great and the salad was next to original really refreshing. The White Ox dinner menu has a lot of good to choose from as well, most noticeable the dessert with names like tiramisu Nirvana and foodporn…

There is more

Mr. Black & the White Ox work closely together with the hotel that is located in the same building. The breakfast you’ll get at that hotel is served at Mr. Black. But there is more! On the top level of the building is also a huge circular room that is great as an option for a work party or anniversary!
